The oldest work of literature
The oldest work of literature is the Epic of Gilgamesh, an epic poem from ancient Mesopotamia, today the region of Iraq, which belongs to the Sumero-Babylonian culture. This was written on 12 clay tablets and kept in the library of the Assyrian king Assurbanipal in Nineveh. Some people believed that it was inspired by a series of Sumerian legends and poems about the mythological king of the citadel of Uruk – Gilgamesh. Some of the themes addressed in this work are the existential drama of man, his struggle with occult forces and the prospect of their defeat, the relationship with woman and the relationship of friendship between people, the fear of death and the thirst for immortality.
