THE CHRONICLES OF TÂRGU JIU
THE CHRONICLES OF TÂRGU JIU
The story takes place at the beginning of the 16th century in a fictional kingdom known as the Kingdom of Northern Oltenia, whose capital is Târgu Jiu. The kingdom is ruled by King Constantin, a just, courageous, and God-fearing ruler, and Queen Liliana, renowned for her kindness and compassion toward the poor, the sick, and orphans. In the year 1509, their son Nicolae, the heir to the throne, is born.
Nicolae grows up in a family that teaches him faith, justice, and love for others. His father tells him that a true king must always be ready to give his life for his people, while his mother reads the Holy Scriptures to him and teaches him humility, mercy, and forgiveness. At the same time, the high nobleman Vlad secretly prepares a conspiracy to overthrow the royal family.
Facing the growing threat of the Ottoman Empire and the unrest spreading across Europe, King Constantin strengthens alliances with neighboring states and prepares the army to defend the kingdom. In 1516, he personally leads his forces in the Battle of the Jiu River, achieving a great victory. However, on his return, he is treacherously assassinated in an attack orchestrated by the conspirators.
The entire kingdom falls into mourning. Shortly afterward, Queen Liliana is poisoned by Vlad's followers. Before her death, she blesses her son and urges him to love God, to be just, to forgive whenever possible, and to protect the innocent. Left an orphan at only six years old, Nicolae is secretly taken out of the royal fortress by the elderly servant Maria and the loyal soldiers Radu and Vladimir.
Hidden in the Parâng Mountains, Nicolae spends his childhood and adolescence far from the throne. Maria teaches him to read and write, while Radu and Vladimir train him in the arts of warfare and kingship. Every day Nicolae reads the Holy Bible, strengthening his faith. At the age of seventeen, he receives his father's sword and swears to reclaim his kingdom—not out of a desire for revenge, but to restore justice.
Former soldiers of King Constantin and many faithful people join his cause. Together they march toward Târgu Jiu. Many of the defenders of the capital recognize the rightful heir and side with him. Vlad is captured and brought to trial. Nicolae is crowned King Nicolae I of the Kingdom of Northern Oltenia. He reduces taxes, rebuilds the fortresses, reopens schools and hospitals, helps the needy, and rules with justice, earning the love and respect of his people.
Five years of peace and prosperity follow. Yet the kingdom's success awakens the envy of its enemies. A new conspiracy arises, and a coup d'état forces Nicolae to abandon the throne. To spare the capital from destruction and save his people from needless bloodshed, he escapes through a secret passage together with Radu and Vladimir, promising that one day he will return.
The three men arrive in the Grand Duchy of Moscow, where Nicolae's grandfather, Ieremia, resides. The old man welcomes him with great affection and, before his death, leaves him a letter. In it, he advises Nicolae to travel to the distant Kingdom of Joseon, whose king had once been his close friend and would surely receive him with kindness.
After his grandfather's funeral, Nicolae, Radu, and Vladimir begin a long journey eastward. Thirty-one days later, they arrive in Joseon. The king receives them with great honor in memory of his friendship with Ieremia and welcomes Nicolae into the royal palace.
Nicolae learns the language and customs of the land without ever abandoning his Christian faith. Every morning he reads the Holy Scriptures and prays. The King of Joseon is deeply impressed by Nicolae's wisdom, humility, and noble character. The two engage in many conversations about God, justice, leadership, and forgiveness. Nicolae demonstrates that true wisdom comes from God and that a ruler should govern through justice and love rather than fear.
During the meetings of the Great Council of Joseon, Nicolae respectfully speaks about his faith without forcing it upon others. The ministers and scholars admire his character, and the king appoints him as one of his closest advisors.
For two years, Nicolae helps the King of Joseon govern the kingdom wisely. Later, at the king's encouragement, he meets the noblewoman Eun-hee, a young woman admired for her kindness and wisdom. They marry, and God blesses them with children. Nicolae finds a new family and a new home, yet he never forgets his homeland.
Every day he continues to pray for the Kingdom of Northern Oltenia and keeps alive the hope that one day he will return to see his people and his native land once again.
The central message of The Chronicles of Târgu Jiu is that true power is not found in a crown, a sword, or worldly riches, but in faith in God, justice, love for others, the courage to do what is right, and the hope that endures even through life's greatest trials. Nicolae is a ruler who loses his throne and his homeland, but never loses his faith. That faith guides his entire life and prepares him for the challenges that still lie ahead.[Cristian Diaconița]
