Ecdysis Aeterni
The sun rises once more, on the dark Plutonian shore,
Such is fate! Helen, Guinevere, Eurydice, Lenore.
Before the expanse of time shall set and fall.
Do we not need new muses, new passions of the heart?
Let us find excitement in Babylon, Assyria, in Gaul...
Exotic paint, strange backgrounds, awe inspiring art,
Different sights, original notes drawn on the harp.
Marvelous and strange phrases, glamorous verses that cut sharp.
The thing of evil, the prophet, has flown off the Pallas bust,
South of the Dardanelle's waters, only marred stone pillars, ruins and rust.
The songs of Orpheus have grown mute and subdued.
The Sibyl's prophecies have long been dimmed, forgotten.
The knights, flowers adorning their stone armour, upon fields are strewed.
The stem of the everlasting rose, wilted and rotten,
Its treasure of colours faded and silent,
The petals, withered by a death too violent.
As the strings vibrate, shake their dust,
To allow new sounds to appear, we must.
A ceaseless cycle of our world that might one day end,
The last speck of light will submit to the vastness of the dark.
What words will we use then? When our will can only bend,
To the will of the null, the vast expanse that used to mark...
Our consciousness and our belief in a loving God,
Haven't we been taught to peer past this façade?
We raised glittering spires of golden onyx and marble.
The monuments of our empire would never again lose their sparkle.
For millennia we begged for our salvation,
On our broken knees and bleeding elbows.
We burned our children at the pyre for the cessation,
Of the enmity that through the world silently rose,
Still, not a weak murmur or a shaky voice could we discern.
It's going to be a long time yet, before we finally learn...
That our lord and savior has no other abject desire,
But to stand, watch and play his magnificent lyre.
Mercy, pity could never be afforded to such sordid creatures.
But Lo! Rejoice! We were created in your image, 'lest we forget.
Our anger, cruelty and lust are your best features.
Why did you leave us? In this empty universe set?
Oxygen, gravity and heat, all things are absent here,
We built complex machines of iron and oil to mimic our lonely sphere.
No borders now, for our unstoppable force,
On the universe itself, our laws we shall forever enforce.
Not questioning the way atoms or electrons move.
But imposing our rules on every facet of existence,
No being left to alter, nothing left to prove.
The ability to go to any length, to any distance.
All for a single perspective, one true aim.
To fan the orange flame, impose our eternal claim.
Glass domes and resplendent columns now adorn,
Planets where man could never have imagined being born.
Statues of jade crowd our artificial slate, hunting for design despite already being cognate.
And yet, our essence doesn't feel entirely complete,
A famine inside our psyche that we cannot sate.
The all-devouring need for the new that conquers our conceit.
New pleasures, abstract ways of intense feeling.
Obscene intercourse and beautiful drama keep our life appealing.
Doesn't it all lie in a paradox? In this contradiction?
We struggle for the impossible despite its constriction,
Yearn for the novel even if it's never enough.
Distraught when west impetuously becomes east,
Yet mortified, when time forgoes its ancient rebuff.
A curse from which we shall never be released.
We are Adam's children, his feather is our plume.
